Special Fast

The Stake President has requested our stake join in other surrounding stakes next Sunday (August 5th) in an area wide FAST for rain. As you may imagine, many families in our stake have livelihoods that are in grave danger because of the drought; some parts of our stake have even been put into the "disaster relief" category by the Federal Government. We hope we can all combine our faith and efforts in fasting and prayer next Sunday for this devastating drought to end.

Emergency Preparedness Fair Blood Drive

The blood drive associated with the Emergency Preparedness Fair will take place at the Stake Center on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 11:30 am until 7:00 pm and on Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.

To sign up to donate blood, go to www.redcrossblood.org.  On that web page, in the upper right hand corner is a blue box which reads "Make a blood donation appointment".  Clicking on that box takes you to a page which reads "Find a donation opportunity".  In the Sponsor code box, type ldsbentonville then click Find.  This takes you to the page with the Emergency Preparedness Fair blood drives. (The Red Cross separates Friday and Saturday into two drives.)  Click on "Click here to schedule an appointment" for whichever day you desire.  This takes you to the donor sign in page.  If you haven't signed up to give blood since last year, you need to click on the Register now button and fill out that form.  Otherwise type in your user id and password.  Once you've logged in, you'll be sent to the donor sign up page and can click on an available time.

Donating one unit of blood saves three lives.  We're hoping to collect enough blood to save 630 lives.

NB  On the webpage www.redcrossblood.org is a section which gives information about donating blood. If you click on "getting ready for your donation" you can read about hydrating before hand, what to wear and what to bring with you.  There is also a link on foods to eat to keep you from becoming anemic.

Humanitarian Community Service Backpack Event

Note from Shannon Green at Samaritan Center:
On August 11th, from 10am to 1pm the Samaritan Community Center (in conjunction with the United Way) will be distributing 4000 backpacks across NW Arkansas with three distribution events being held simultaneously in Rogers, Springdale and Gravette. These events will center around the actual distribution but will also include an outdoor cookout (hot dogs and hamburgers), free haircuts, and other events (depending upon the location). Our Rogers location will be the primary location and will include a carnival-style atmosphere with multiple booths (sponsored by local businesses, vendors, and churches) offering games, bouncy houses, snacks, and possible pony rides.  While we are thrilled about the day’s fun events, more importantly we are excited about the opportunity to get backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies into these children’s hands prior to school beginning for the year. We believe that this allows them to start the school year with excitement and “even footing” as they are fully prepared.

Shannon’s hope is for this event to be similar to our Preparedness Fair….with many churches etc. coming together.
